İzmir Institute of Technology (IzTech), founded in 1992, is one of two institutes of technology in Turkey with special emphasis on research and education in technological fields. IzTech is a research university, which offers a student- and project-centered education. IzTech has continually ranked among the top universities of the country with its English-medium education system, which conforms to international standards. Research and education are offered in 37 graduate (25 MSc, 12 PhD) and ten undergraduate programs at the Graduate School of Engineering and Sciences, and Schools of Sciences, Engineering, and Architecture. In addition to the (MSc/PhD) graduate program in Molecular Biology and Genetics, there are eight interdisciplinary programs at the graduate level, one of which is the Biotechnology and Bioengineering Program.
As a part of the School of Sciences, the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics (MBG) is actively engaged in research and educational activities. MBG has 16 faculty members, four specialists, and over 20 research assistants, 40 graduate and 150 undergraduate students. MBG leads the Institute in the number of extramurally funded projects and the total amount of research funding. Currently, MBG faculty members receive over 20 research grants from TÜBİTAK and from other national and international agencies. MBG has just moved to the new Molecular Biology and Genetics building, which houses 25 faculty research laboratories (two halls, 110 square meter each), seven shared laboratories (i.e., hot/cold, dark, and clean rooms), two educational laboratories, six classrooms, an auditorium, a recently accredited animal facility, and offices and social interaction areas for faculty members and graduate students. MBG is well equipped with research facilities to carry out research in areas such as molecular biology, microbiology, cancer biology, biochemistry, plant biotechnology, proteomics, genomics, immunology, structural biology, and bioinformatics. Undergraduate, graduate students and faculty members from other institutions are encouraged to use these facilities in a collaborative environment. Several research centers complement departmental research laboratories for on-campus access to more specialized state-of-the-art equipment. These centers include the Biotechnology-Bioengineering Research Center (BBRC), Computer Research Center, Environmental Research Center (ERC), Center for Materials Research (CMR), and Center for Biological Mass Spectrometry and Proteomics (CBMS).
